2011-2012 SAT/ACT Registration Information and suggestions

Test date-type                                  Registration deadline
2/11– ACT                                                        1/13
Some juniors will use this date to attempt the ACT; you have completed midterm exams, plan to use some of Spring Break to visit colleges, and realize that having a set of scores to use (either to gauge your test-taking skills or to determine how to better prepare for future tests) will assist you in your college search. If you play a spring sport, juniors should look at this as the best date to take the ACT.

3/10 - SAT                                                         2/10
This is the date for most juniors to take their initial crack at the SAT Reasoning Test; while you may be mentally exhausted from HSPA the week before, you’re not in the middle of sports seasons and you are nowhere near preparing for either AP Exams or your final exams – this is a date that you should target! There are no subject tests at this administration.

4/14 – ACT                                                       3/9
If you did not take the February ACT, you may want to consider using this date for a trial run on the ACT. You should have scores in time to register for the June administrations of either the SAT or ACT if you desire/need a retake.

5/5 – SAT and subject tests                            4/6
If I am in AP classes, I likely will take subject tests at this administration. You can take up to 3 subject tests, and many graduates have commented that the subject tests and APs go hand-in-hand. You have pretty much covered all of the content in those courses, so you might as well take the subject tests – most schools want you to take English and a Math, but you can take whichever tests you feel most comfortable taking.
If I’m in Honors or A-level classes, I likely will take the SAT on this date, and save subject tests for June (closer to the end of the school year).

6/2 – SAT and subject tests                            5/8
If I am in Honors or A-level classes, I likely will take subject tests at this administration. You can take up to 3 subject tests, and you should take tests in whichever subjects you feel most comfortable. Hopefully, you’ve looked into some colleges to see which tests they might require. Classes that would be most appropriate: Chemistry Honors, Physics Honors, Biology Honors, Latin Honors, Spanish Honors, French Honors, US History Honors, World History Honors, Algebra II Honors, PreCalculus/Trigonometry Honors, English III Honors.
If I’m in AP classes, I likely will take the SAT on this date, though some of you may be satisfied with your early test scores and will opt to take a few more subject tests – your call.

6/9 – ACT                                                          5/4
For the past few years, quite a few BHS juniors have taken the ACT in June. If you are not sure of the differences between the two tests, ask your counselor. Most schools will accept either score when you apply. The ACT will also be offered in September, October, and December of your senior year.

To register, please visit either http://sat.collegeboard.com/register/sat-dates or
http://www.actstudent.org/regist/dates.html  for more information. Please note that BHS does not offer the exams on-site.

Points to ponder:
  • Some schools will accept ACTs in lieu of SAT Subject Tests – check with schools of interest to you.
  • Be aware that you may have athletic conflicts with the April, May and June test dates; also remember that prom plans may pose a conflict with desired test dates.
  • If you are planning to apply Early Decision or Early Action, the September ACT and October SAT are your last testing opportunities – this certainly should NOT be your first time taking the exam!

Teacher Recommendations
As of 1/9, the Guidance staff and administration are unable to "send" forms authored by another person, regardless of release forms. Please note that there is no longer a safety net - if a teacher has difficulty accessing the system or is unable to send forms from his/her own computer, only that individual has the ability to send forms to each school.

There will no disruption to Naviance or the submission of forms by Bernards High School; there have been no problems with the submission of transcripts, counselor recommendations, the profile, etc., and we do not expect that there will be any in the future. Just please be aware that full responsibility for successful submission of the recommendations has been returned to the students and teachers. Please contact your recommender directly to ensure that future school recommendations are sent promptly.
